Time for change
The NHS Commissioning Board is to review the English model of urgent and emergency services, to try and balance local access to hospital services and high quality critical care for more complicated cases.
The review is the latest in the health service’s leaning towards a new system of care, where emergency services are consolidated and strengthened in core units, rather than spread about the country regardless of demand, and thus the level of experience consultants in these areas can gain.
Public opposition to such plans remains high, as can be seen in the campaigns against Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board’s proposals.
Can medical professionals launch a strong enough case to overcome this and push the case for change?
