Trust names new senior leadership team and appoints CEO and turnaround director

A troubled acute trust has appointed a new senior leadership team including a new chief executive and a ‘turnaround director’.

Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals Trust (RLBUH) has appointed Peter Williams as its chief executive at the head of the entirely new leadership team on an interim basis, following the departure of Aidan Kehoe who left for Qatar.

Colin Hont has been appointed as interim chief nurse, Paul Fitzsimmons as chief operating officer, and Andrew Loughney as interim medical director.

Together they will oversee the progress of the proposed merger between RLBUH and Aintree University Hospitals Trust (AUH).

Michael Wright will join the trust as turnaround director, starting from today, leaving his post as finance director for Barnsley Hospital FT.

The trust has struggled with significant performance and financial issues in recent years, and was hit last year by the collapse of the contractor Carillion which forced its new Royal Liverpool Hospital plans to be severely delayed.

The trust is not in special measures but is subject to four different levels of NHS oversight.

Also, part of the new executive team at RLBUH is a director of workforce and performance, Debbie Herring, Helen Shaw as director of communications, Paul Bradshaw in charge of finance on an interim basis, and David Walliker as chief information officer.

The new interim chief executive Williams has served as the medical director for the trust since 2008 and first joined as a research fellow in 1984.

He said: “From my many years caring for people in Liverpool, I am acutely aware of the healthcare needs of the local population. I have been heavily involved in the work both at the trust and in collaboration with local regional partners to improve our services and care for patients.”

“As interim chief executive, I am delighted to be playing such an important role as we move through this exciting transitional period.”

“I believe that we have a very experienced team with a mixture of expertise suited to steering the trust towards achieving its objectives.”

Peter also paid tribute to the previous chief executive, Aidan Kehoe, stating: “During his six years as chief executive, Aidan worked tirelessly to deliver our shared aim of improving the lives of the people of Merseyside and beyond.”
