Under review
Several reviews are currently ongoing, or about to begin, across the NHS. It is part of the health service’s response to the Francis inquiry, with new regulatory powers for Monitor and a review into hospitals with high mortality rates, led by Sir Bruce Keogh.
Shining a spotlight on hospitals with worrying levels of care can only be a good thing – if relevant action is taken to follow up their recommendations.
It will be some time before the usefulness of this greater scrutiny can be truly evaluated. If this leads to the hoped-for improvements in quality of the health service, the approach may need to be used more widely, as trusts struggle to balance high savings targets with good provision of care.
