Up the tempo
The new certificate for temporary practice could help to speed up the transfer of consultant doctors throughout the NHS and universities.
Keeping records up to date is the only sensible option to justify their creation, and if this can support increased demand in other hospitals, all the better. Taking weeks to check competencies for short-term help is inefficient and a block to flexible and productive working practices.
The number of consultants present on wards is often criticised – perhaps the development of this new certificate will help to redistribute expertise to meet demand.
