New £250m Broadmoor Hospital opened in Crowthorne
More than 150 years after the original world-renowned hospital was opened, the new Broadmoor Hospital is finally completed.
Staff and patients have moved into the new, state-of-the-art facility which takes replaces the former hospital, most of whose building’s pre-date the foundation of the NHS.
Broadmoor is one of three high-security hospitals in England. The new site will be able to provide care for up to 210 men with mental illness and personality disorders who present a high risk to others or themselves.
The new hospital is located on the existing grounds to the west of the old site and has been purpose built to provide a safe, relaxing environment for the patients to promote rehabilitation in a high-secure setting.
The carers, staff and patients have all had close involvement within the development, design and artwork of the hospital, focusing on the safety but also wellbeing.
Some of the key elements which were focused on were:
- Airy ward areas, with plenty of natural light and access to ward gardens
- A central building housing a wide range of calming, vocational, educational and healthy living activities and multi-faith room
- A multi-disciplinary team located on every ward
- A contemporary layout which allows staff to observe patients effectively and maintain a welcoming environment
Carolyn Regan, Chief Executive of West London NHS Trust, says: “The new hospital epitomises the ethos of hope and recovery at Broadmoor.
“With its focus on the use of space and natural light, the hospital has been designed to reflect this ethos, but it is, above all, the people who make the difference. The expertise, compassion and calm professionalism of the staff at Broadmoor are fundamental to the way in which they care for and work with patients towards their rehabilitation and recovery.
“The new hospital enables us to provide this care in an environment fit for the 21st Century over the coming years.”
