Government statement on A&E closures
Following a number of reports concerning A&E closures, the government has confirmed that A&E will only operate if staffing levels are ‘sufficient’. However, a Department of Health spokesperson said: “The number of doctors choosing to specialise in A&E is rising. “Opportunities to pursue non-training grades are part of the flexibility offered in medicine. “The blend between training and non-training posts in any particular hospital is a matter for the local Trust.” A trust in south London has already said that it will have to close it’s A&E ward due to low staffing levels.
