Skin cancer should be a healthcare priority by 2015, say melanoma experts

Leading skin cancer experts have called for increased coordination between the NHS, local authorities and voluntary groups to change people’s attitudes and behaviour towards sun protection.

This is one of 20 recommendations outlined in the 2015 Skin Cancer Visions report, published by the Melanoma Taskforce, chaired by SiânJames MP; a chief campaigner for the under-18s sunbed ban enacted this year.

The report’s recommendations include targeting public awareness campaigns on the dangers of overexposure to the sun and the importance of early detection of skin cancer at the most susceptible groups.

It also recommends training for GPs and information for pharmacists, hairdressers, physiotherapists, swimming instructors and others who come into contact with people’s skin, on how to spot the signs of skin cancer.

Speaking at the launch of the report, Siân James MP said: “ The tragedy is that most cases of skin cancer are preventable, and many patients could have been treated successfully had their symptoms been detected early.”
