The new statistics from Cancer Research UK demonstrate the all-encompassing threat that the disease has become. In 15 years time, half of all men will be at risk of developing cancer at some point in their lives, as well as 44 out of every 100 women.
The rise in risk is mostly down to extended life expectancy, which of itself should be considered a success for modern healthcare. The longer people live, the more susceptible they become to disease.
Survival rates are also rising, with advancements in technology that deliver earlier detection and effective treatment.
It is imperative that research continues to support survival as the risk of developing cancer increases. Otherwise the NHS may struggle to keep up with the condition.
