Holistic healing
With growing acceptance of the huge scale of mental health problems in the UK, as well as an appreciation of both the human and economic necessity of treating these issues, access to psychological therapies should also be increasing.
Yet new research suggests only a quarter of those with mental illness are receiving any form of treatment.
Many of these problems are common and have inexpensive treatments available. There needs to be a significant step-change in the way the NHS responds to these cases, to improve quality of care for patients and achieve considerable savings.
It is part of the larger need to recognise that health cannot be simplistically cleaved into ‘mental’ and ‘physical’. Health is holistic and problems with one part of the body or mind will impact on other areas of the patient’s wellbeing.
