More than words
The new proposals to increase the provision of Welsh services in health and social care have come under criticism from BMA Wales for threatening recruitment and taking precedence over waiting times targets.
The proposed framework calls for the workforce to increase its capability to provide Welsh language services, something which the BMA believes is both unnecessary and potentially harmful to patient care if given priority over investing in care.
So is there a real need for Welsh language services? Or is this just part of the larger push to increase the language’s prominence?
If the latter is true, this should not come at the expense of other important considerations, and new recruits should not be limited by their ability to speak Welsh.
