Slim majority
More doctors’ strikes seem to be looming on the horizon now that members of the BMA have voted for further industrial action and have passed a vote of no confidence in health secretary Andrew Lansley.
But the vote was by no means by an overwhelming majority, and as was shown by the number of practices and hospitals that continued providing care as normal through the day of industrial action last week, not all doctors are convinced of the value of such action.
Perhaps a new leader, fresh discussion and consideration of the consequences of their industrial action may help find a solution to this dispute.
Additionally, there is little to be gained by continually opposing the NHS reforms now that they are legislation; a more productive path would be to find a way to work forwards in the new structure of the NHS.
