Digital key
The health secretary is recognising the importance of moving towards a digital NHS, not just for the cost efficiencies, but for the improvements in patient safety and reduction of errors in prescriptions and patient records.
Addressing patient safety requires a whole-system approach – an effective service that delivers quality care will protect patients from the consequences of error.
IT provides a simple way to achieve this and, once set up, digital systems will continue to benefit both patients and the taxpayer through greater coordination of treatment and a workforce that is freed up to meet rising demand.
