Final options
The publication of the Trust Special Administrator’s final report on South London Healthcare NHS Trust sees some radical solutions offered.
There are no easy options left for the trust, which was overspending by £1.3m each week. But with large scale reform of services, there will be many who oppose the plans, some with good reason, and others simply because of the scale of the change.
The first use of the Regime for Unsustainable NHS Providers could provide a flagship case for many other struggling trusts, slipping nearer and nearer to unsustainable spending and damaged service provision.
It will also test the Government’s ability to push through major change which has so far been heatedly protested by the public. The NHS is clear that service reconfiguration is vital, yet patients are adamant about keeping their local hospitals. Has the message developed enough yet to convince those against the changes?
