Food for thought
Many people will have watched last night’s Channel 4 expose of terrible hospital food.
Our recent investigation in National Health Executive magazine found some laudable examples of good practice and committed staff, but nobody thinks the state of hospital catering nationwide is anything to be proud of.
The elderly seem particularly hard hit by poor food, as they are the most likely to need help eating it and to struggle to complain about quality. The Ombudsman’s report earlier this month included shocking cases of neglect of the elderly, including at meal times.
It is not always a question of budgets and the solutions are not always obvious, but it is an area in which the NHS must improve.
