Help or hindrance?
Are parenting classes and the new information service evidence that we are living in a ‘nanny state’?
After all, people have been raising children for countless generations. A reliance on the Government, or some form of authority, to instruct us on how to behave could be seen by some as an unwelcome infringement on their free will, as well as an insult to their capabilities.
Then again, with so many challenges in today’s society explained away with ‘bad parenting’, perhaps it is time to admit some help would not go amiss.
Reducing the stigma around asking for assistance does not necessarily mean our society is weak, or unable to cope. Admitting that something is difficult and taking steps to overcome that difficulty is a sign of flexibility and commitment, as opposed to too much stubborn pride.
Besides, the fact that these trials, and the information service are completely voluntary mean that parents are not being told what to do; they are simply being offered help if they want it.
