Left alone
Charities this morning are warning that there are many more care homes around the UK where people with learning disabilities are being neglected and abused.
A common concern is the large distance from home that many people are cared for in these facilities, making any kind of monitoring by their families difficult.
Clearly such behaviour by staff – whether negligent or actively abusive – cannot be tolerated, but other cases have shown all too clearly that if it is, it can become normal for other staff to get involved.
We cannot always just blame the regulator: such incidents are the fault of the staff concerned, and no regulator can be everywhere, especially one whose resources are stretched ever-further as it copes with increased responsibilities.
