Let down by the system
The Schizophrenia Commission has published its report on the condition, following a year-long inquiry into the level of care available, and what can be done to improve treatment.
The recommendations must now be taken forward with mental health organisations and the NHS alike, to radically change care provision for people with schizophrenia.
A lack of awareness and understanding can lead to patients being kept in expensive secure units for longer than necessary, and opportunities for both psychological therapies and employment are miserably thin on the ground.
The NHS Commissioning Board should take this report very seriously, and work to deliver better prevention, treatment and respect.
