The latest staff survey results show a mixed picture – with improvements in a number of areas, yet still a great deal of room for improvement.
The discourse on the results reflects various organisational bias, as the royal colleges seek to highlight unacceptable risks to staff safety and NHS Employers welcomes the increase in engagement.
Perhaps the most telling figures in the survey are those surrounding how able staff feel to raise issues and concerns. This is of particular importance following the Francis review, and much more needs to be done to support NHS workers to blow the whistle without any – sometimes justified – fears about the impact on their own career.
The NHS would do well to leave aside black and white judgements about the positivity or otherwise of this survey, and to spend that time actually listening to what its staff have to say.
