Means to an end
Jeremy Hunt has highlighted the extent of the problems with cases of appalling care on the NHS, with incidents occurring so regularly and in such a widespread way that they point to an underlying culture of neglect and disregard for dignity.
He has called for greater accountability in these institutions to stop standards slipping in the first place. It makes absolute sense for managers to be penalised for poor care in the same way that they are for financial mismanagement, such as that highlighted by the NAO today.
Having robust finances is essential to delivering good quality care, but it should be viewed in this way, as a means to an end rather than a goal in and of itself. With all the pressure to withstand cuts and survive the huge efficiency drive, perhaps some managers have lost sight of this.
It is good care that the NHS must overall strive to achieve, for patients who are treated with respect during their time in the health service.
