Monitor’s latest announcement highlights the increasingly blurry line between independent and public providers of NHS-funded healthcare.
The former will now be regulated and licensed as well, to protect both patient and provider.
As trusts can make more and more profit through competition, it is worth considering the long-term consequences of a more mixed healthcare sector. The government has repeatedly made assurances that greater competition will lead to improved care. But many concerns have been raised about moving further away from a health service that is fundamentally free at the point of delivery.
