Never too late
New research indicates that an active, healthy lifestyle, maintained into old age can significantly extend life expectancy.
The NHS has promoted better public health for many years, but actually increasing lifespan could provide a powerful motivator for people currently living unhealthy lifestyles.
The key information from this study though is that it is almost never too late to change your habits and have a tangible effect. Researchers found that people aged 85 could still improve their life expectancy by up to four years by eating healthier, exercising more, quitting smoking and drinking less heavily.
For our increasingly ageing population, this is good news. Improving health and cutting the cost and dependency on the health service is still possible, right up until old age.
