Outside the box
High savings targets and rising pressure on resources mean that trusts must increasingly think innovatively to survive. The consequences of failure can be seen all around, with hospitals in deficit and services being compromised.
Projects such as the Hull and East Yorkshire smartphone app are prime examples of using the latest technology to improve the patient experience and direct the care pathway away from unnecessary visits to A&E.
And the merger of the IHM and RSPH will no doubt offer increased productivity, through a sharing of staff and resources. Integrated working and mutual support of this kind can radically boost the quality of services for both staff and patients, whilst providing much-needed savings.
Thinking outside the box is becoming ever-more critical, and trusts must learn to share their efforts and experience, to increase the productivity of the entire NHS.
