Pressing pause
The confusion over children’s heart surgery at Leeds hospital has not abated, as NHS England reframes the suspension of operations as a “pause”.
Following a risk summit over mortality data last Thursday, it seemed likely that surgery would recommence early this week. The final decision will be based on the outcomes of a review into concerns over staffing, governance and mortality.
NHS England has continued to adopt the view that the so-called pause was a necessary precaution. Of course nobody wants dangerous practice to continue, but there is a widening gap between the concerns raised by Sir Bruce – mortality double the average – and the trust itself, which protests surgery should restart as soon as possible.
Will the results of this review shed more light on the situation?
