Take a moment
With the publication of the Francis report, organisations and professionals from across the NHS came forward to offer apologies and determination that the scandal at Mid Staffs would never happen again.
These statements seemed to be sincere and clearly set out action to be taken in response to Francis’ recommendations.
But amongst the watershed moments, there was also a move to demonstrate how the NHS was already working to improve its accountability, transparency and quality of care.
It is a fine line to manoeuvre – the NHS must be seen to accept responsibility for its mistakes and be ready to fix the system. Yet too many organisations were a little too fast to point out that they were already back on the right track.
Where does this leave all the learning and consideration? Whole system change will only be achieved when the entire NHS truly recognises the need to do so, rather than apologising whilst simultaneously carrying on the way they were.
