The afterthought of health?
With all the advances in technology, modern ways of working and progress on some of the biggest killer diseases, it is pertinent to remember that every year hundreds of children die needlessly on the NHS.
Health minister Dr Dan Poulter is to announce a pledge to improve the mortality rate for children in the UK, potentially saving as many as 1,600 lives a year.
The steps outlined to achieve this seem to be in the right direction: more and better information, to ensure the size and scale of problems and variation in care can be accurately identified.
Quality of care for children can never be just an afterthought.
