The final alarm?
The Francis report, published this morning, could have serious implications for the NHS, with more severe penalties for poor care that leads to patient harm and death.
His recommendations – all 290 of them – span better and deeper regulation, a ‘Duty of Candour’ requiring all staff to own up to their mistakes, tougher entry requirements to nursing and a complete slashing of tolerance for poor care.
It is now up to the NHS, and the Government, to read this report carefully and ensure that this does not become just one more alarm bell in a culture that ignores whistleblowers and the need for change.
