Time to stop?
The European Working Time Directive exists to protect people from working a ridiculous, and unsafe, number of hours each week.
In the NHS, this in turn promotes patient safety, as they receive better care from more alert staff, who are less likely to make potentially devastating mistakes and are physically and mentally prepared for the challenge of working in a high-pressure environment.
So is this something that should be abolished in the UK? Of course there are issues with the Directive, and it is by no means perfect, but seeking to remove this without careful consideration of alternative means of limiting doctor’s working hours could be incredibly damaging.
