Reputation above responsibility
Who regulates the regulator? The tricky question of responsibility has arisen as the CQC is accused of covering up a review which demonstrated failures in its inspection regime that may have lead to babies’ deaths.
A new report by Grant Thornton suggests critical information about the safety of the maternity unit at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust was suppressed to save the CQC’s reputation.
If these allegations are correct, it demonstrates a clear problem with our current system of inspection. How can we be sure that patients will be informed of trusts which are providing unsafe care if those inspecting filter reports to only show themselves in a good light?
