The push for revalidation has been given an extra boost today, as nine patient associations team up to pile the pressure on Andrew Lansley.
Patients deserve to know that their doctor is competent to deliver care safely and effectively, they have stated.
Revalidation has been a long time coming, but it seems as if the support for the competency scheme has reached a point where these calls can no longer be ignored or delayed.
Over a long career, personal circumstances can change significantly, and it is time it is recognised that this can affect doctors’ work.
For such a vital role, it is simply not good enough to test them once then let them get on with it. Patients lives are in their hands – let’s make sure they handle that responsibility carefully.
