Management in the NHS needs ‘clear guidance’
The NHS needs more effective management and leadership training to meet the efficiency challenge, a new report suggests.
Healthcare consultancy 2020 Delivery is launching its report at the NHS Confederation Annual Conference (June 20-22) highlighting the key challenges facing the health service in terms of management capabilities.
2020 Delivery found a large variation in the amount of expenditure on leadership and management across different NHS providers; from less than £100 per employee to over £1,000.
There is “no clear guidance” on what appropriate spending or training provision looks like, the authors argue, as well as inadequate evaluation of training programme and no comparison of development expenditure between trusts.
The report recommends that training must be focused on delivering tangible and measurable outcomes linked to talent management and joined up with other trusts. The skills developed must be relevant to day-to-day working challenges and for which there is an actual business need.
