Flexibility needed for national pay on NHS – NHS Employers
NHS organisations need more flexibility from staff and unions on salaries and conditions if the principle of national pay deals is to be preserved, NHS Employers has told unions, as it urges cooperation to tackle financial challenges.
Union leaders are gathering in Brighton for the annual Trades Union Congress, where they have suggested the creation of a merger between the GMB and Unison, as well as coordinated strikes over pay.
The unions have also voiced concerns over certain NHS trusts considering local pay arrangements.
NHS Employers has published proposals on changes to the national pay and terms of conditions framework and is awaiting a response from NHS trade unions.
Dean Royles, director of NHS Employers, said: “We know that the stresses and strains of financial pressure are building on both organisations and individuals. In this environment, it is easy to play the blame game, but I see the NHS trade unions as part of the solution, not the root of the problem.
“The pay bill represents over 65% of employers’ cost and, despite a pay freeze, it continues to increase as a result of incremental progression. The NHS needs a deal that is more affordable, sustainable and responsive to deliver best value for our patients and better job security for our staff.
“I know this will be hard for some but it’s the best way of retaining a national framework for the pay and conditions of staff in the NHS.”
