NHS Providers: PPE guidance must restore confidence of clinicians

With increased pressure on health governing bodies to provide further, detailed guidance on personal protective equipment (PPE), NHS Providers have stressed the importance of that direction meeting the demands of healthcare professions to restore confidence among the ranks.

Although early efforts to provide guidance have been released this week, a major review into PPE and how best to use the resources remains yet to be published, with NHS Providers hoping this can occur quickly and it help alleviate some of the concerns among front line workers over current PPE practices.

Deputy Chief Executive of NHS Providers, Saffron Cordery, said: “We’ve been calling for clarity on the PPE guidance so front line clinicians can feel as safe as possible as they treat and care for patients.

“The joint letter published at the weekend was a helpful start, but more is needed if we are to regain front line confidence in the way that is needed.

“This is an issue of concern and urgency for trust leaders and its frustrating that the review is taking so long.

“We hope and expect that this document, backed by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, which represents all the key medical specialties, will resolve outstanding questions over the appropriate and sustainable use of this kit.”
