NHSI launches training programme to upskill managers
A three-year programme to upskill NHS managers in order to help them tackle growing demand for services is being launched today.
The new national Demand and Capacity Trainer Programme has been designed as a free resource to upskill and support local NHS staff so that they are better prepared to master demand and capacity planning, as well as improve patient outcomes by reducing waiting times.
Sponsored by NHS Improvement (NHSI) and NHS England, the scheme aims to help upskill 300-400 local managers and ease pressure by equipping leaders with all the tools to improve efficiency in their trusts.
And this summer, a new free six-month accredited programme aimed at those in service planning will also be offered to leaders.
Adam Sewell-Jones, executive director of improvement at NHSI, said: “The NHS is seeing more and more patients. We should applaud the effort of staff who work tirelessly to make sure care is delivered as effectively and efficiently as possible.
“However, with waiting times on the rise, there is more to be done to make sure hospitals across the country are prepared for increases in demand.”
Sewell added that the programme aimed to help local NHS services develop skills and knowledge in their own management teams and organisations in order to manage demand and capacity more effectively, rather than having to rely on outside – and sometimes costly – help.
He also argued that the scheme also fits in with NHSI’s wider approach “to support the building of capability and capacity where it is best delivered, rather than having a large central expert team”.
“We want to build a cohort of people locally who in turn will upskill others in their organisations,” continued Sewell-Jones. “Making sure patients can rely on a NHS that is responsive, effective and sustainable is at the heart of what we do. I look forward to seeing the progress over the next three years.”
