For decades, the UK spent less per head and less as a proportion of its wealth on health care than its European neighbours. In 2002, the Wanless Review found that the health service had been underfunded by £200 billion over the last 30 years and concluded that, in order to meet people’s expectations and to deliver the highest quality over the next 20 years, spending on the NHS should rise to £184 billion a year.

As a result, the last 7 years have seen a period of unprecedented growth in spending on the NHS. Annual spending on the NHS has more than doubled and will soon top £100 billion in England alone. By 2022, 10.6% and 12.5% of GDP will be spent on health care compared with 7.7% today.

Despite this massive investment, hardly a week goes by without a story appearing in the media of a “crisis” affecting one aspect of the NHS or another as the government continues its programme of health service reform. One of the most important reforms is the government’s commitment to forge a new relationship between the NHS and the private sector in order to make the health service more efficient.

With government spending on the NHS continuing to increase and the private sector playing an increasingly important role in the delivery of health care and ancillary services, the opportunity to do business with the NHS has never been greater.

National Health Executive features thought provoking and sometimes controversial contributions from managers, academics, politicians and clinicians on a wide range of issues affecting the NHS and is read by chief executives and senior managers across the sector.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to bring your business to their attention in National Health Executive.
