Blood doesn’t grow on trees – NHSBT
A new campaign will use yarnbombing to encourage more young people to donate blood, NHS Blood and Transplant has announced.
The woollen street art aims to raise awareness of the need for more donors, as the number of people aged between 17 and 24 who sign up to give blood has fallen significantly in recent years.
The campaign will see knitted red blood drops hung from trees in busy public places, as well as promotion across social media.
NHSBT spokesperson Donna Batty said: “We started preparing for our campaign several months ago by appealing to knitters to help us create the blood drops.
“We had a tremendous response – more than a thousand people have got involved and we’re hugely grateful for everything they’ve done. As a result of their efforts, we’ve now got more than 8,000 blood drops which we can use to spread our message that ‘blood doesn’t grow on trees’.
“We hope people like the campaign and respond to it by committing to donate blood if they can. I’d like to say a big thank-you to everyone who has supported and responded to it so far.”
