BMA names new council chair to succeed Mark Porter at end of June

The BMA has this week confirmed that Dr Chaand Nagpaul will become the organisation’s new council chair later this month.

With 27 years of experience as a GP in London and having already represented the BMA as its GP committee chair since 2013, Dr Nagpaul will succeed Dr Mark Porter when he vacates the role on 29 June.

The incoming committee chair also received a CBE for his services to primary care in 2015.

New committee chair Dr Nagpaul said: “It is a tremendous privilege and honour to represent the medical profession as BMA council chair.

“The challenges facing doctors and the health service in which we work have never been greater. Doctors are at the sharp end of chronic underfunding, staff shortages and rising demand on the NHS, and see first-hand the devastating impact these pressures have on patient care.”

Dr Nagpaul also vowed to work hard to ensure that the BMA supports doctors facing huge pressures as he stated he will “lead the charge” to push for a properly resourced and funded NHS.

He also paid tribute to outgoing Dr Porter, commenting: “The BMA has always proven itself to be a strong, independent voice for both doctors and the patients we serve and with the NHS at breaking point, this is more important now than ever in holding politicians to account.

“I look forward to continuing with this vital work at a pivotal time for doctors across the profession and for the NHS as a whole.”
