First clinic for dance injuries opens

Source: National Health Executive March/April 2012

The first specialist dance injury clinic has opened as part of the new National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science, backed by several dance organisations and two universities.

The clinic is at the Royal National Orthopaedic hospital inLondon, with the hope for similar services to open inBirminghamand in other locations around theUK.

Many freelance dancers rely on the NHS and the clinic will offer treatment specific to dance injuries as well as a rehabilitation service. The National Institute aims to conduct research into treatment and prevention.

Specialist Dr Roger Wolman, who will run the clinic, said the injuries can be unique to dance: “You don’t see them elsewhere – in that situation a specialist clinic will be able to pick those injuries up very, very quickly and get them the right treatment.”
