Leader of Morecambe Bay investigation accepts PHSO appointment
A lead Morecambe Bay investigator has now been appointed as lead associate investigator at the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman (PHSO).
As well as the investigation into infant deaths at Morecambe Bay hospital, Dr Bill Kirkup CBE led investigations into the Oxford paediatric cardiac surgery unit and Jimmy Savile’s involvement with Broadmoor Hospital.
Nearly 80% of complaints made to the PHSO are about the NHS.
Dr Kirkup said: “I'm very pleased to have been asked to do this work with the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. It’s a very important area that it is vital to get right, and I hope to be able to contribute to that.”
His appointment comes at a time of increased scrutiny for patient safety following commitments made by health secretary Jeremy Hunt at the Global Patient Safety Summit last month.
The board members for the newly-formed NHS Improvement were also announced yesterday.
