London’s First High-Definition CT Scanner Is A Real Gem

The Princess Grace Hospital in Marylebone has installed London’s first high definition, low dose Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner, the Discovery CT750 HD from GE Healthcare. The hospital’s extensive diagnostic imaging facilities will be enhanced further with the scanner, which uses exceptional GE Gemstone™ technology to provide high definition images and low dose.

Most importantly for clinicians and patients, the remarkable image clarity of the scanner can be achieved without increasing the x-ray dose, making it more suitable for patients who require regular CT scans. The x-ray dose is reduced by up to 50% across the entire body, and by as much as 83% for cardiac scans.

GE Healthcare developed the imaging technology by altering the molecular structure of garnet gemstones. This advanced GE Gemstone™ technology produces high-definition images with greater clarity than previous scanners, with up to 33% improvement in spatial resolution throughout the body and up to 47% improvement in spatial resolution in the heart, enabling clinicians to see very small objects.

“We are delighted to be taking delivery of our new Discovery CT750 HD scanner; we have a very busy Diagnostic Imaging department so it will be put to excellent use on the high volumes of patients using our hospital”, said Susan Smith, CEO at The Princess Grace Hospital: “The Princess Grace Hospital has a reputation for cutting-edge patient healthcare, and the HD scanner will enable us to continue to lead the way.”

The Princess Grace Hospital is the only private hospital in the UK to take delivery of this high-definition CT technology, which has applications in a number of departments, most notably for Cardiology and Orthopaedics, but also for Oncology, Maxillofacial and Dentistry usage. There are only six other such CT Scanners in existence elsewhere in the UK. For more information see www.theprincessgracehospital.co.uk/pdf/CTscanner.pdf or call 020 7908 2007

“This exciting scanner which uses GE Gemstone technology, based on the first new detector material in 20 years, helps improve doctors’ ability to see fine anatomical detail in what can be difficult to image diseases,” says Bettina Fitt, General Manager UK, GE Healthcare. “Most importantly, excellent image clarity can be achieved without increasing the x-ray dose to which patients are exposed.”
