Milton Keynes becomes university hospital as part of first private medical school
Milton Keynes Hospital Foundation Trust received university status this month as it takes steps to become part of the country’s first private medical school.
The newly named Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has formed a partnership with the independently funded University of Buckingham in the venture. By 2017 the trust hopes to be teaching 100 students a year.
The first students are due to arrive on wards in May and a new £6m medical school building is to be constructed on the site by the start of 2017, funded by the university.
The trust said the move to becoming a university hospital will help it attract, train and retain the best doctors and clinical staff, and contribute towards its financial stability.
A total of 30 new doctors are expected to join the hospital by the end of 2016 as part of the change in status.
Joe Harrison, chief executive at the trust, said: “Our change to University hospital status is a milestone in the 30 year history of Milton Keynes Hospital, and also an important symbol of our commitment to developing the hospital into a world class centre for healthcare, teaching and research.”
