NHS Staff Survey results revealed

The latest NHS Staff Survey results have been released, with 64.7% of staff saying they would recommend their organisation to friends and family for treatment, up 2.1% on 2012.       

But only 41% of staff were satisfied with the extent to which they felt that their trust values their work, and only 36% said that communication between senior managers and staff is effective. The figures were even lower at ambulance trusts, suggesting some persistent issues, while CCG staff generally gave much better feedback.

Nine out of ten staff said their role ‘makes a difference to patients’.

Overall, the 2013 results from the 203,000 staff who took part (the survey is the largest canvassing of staff opinion in the world) show improvements in 21 out of the 28 categories when compared to 2012.

Sue Covill, director of Employment Services for the NHS Employers organisation, said: “Employers will be encouraged by these results, which come against a backdrop of a challenging year for the NHS. Employers know that building staff engagement and pride in the organisation helps deliver high-quality, compassionate care. Staff feeling valued and being valued is absolutely vital to the effective delivery of patient care and we believe it is an important factor behind many of the positive results.

“It is telling that after all the negativity of the NHS during the past year, over 90% of staff said their role makes a difference to patients, with almost seven out of ten able to make a positive difference to service improvements.”

She said employers would work with staff to deal with the “tough issues” raised in the survey, including abuse and harassment – 15% of NHS staff reported experiencing physical violence and 29% reported that they experienced bullying, harassment and abuse from patients, their relatives or other members of the public in the past 12 months. Just under two-thirds (64%) of incidents of physical violence and 43% of bullying, harassment and abuse cases were reported.

Staff in ambulance trusts were the least likely to recommend their organisation as a place to work (36%), with acute staff being the most likely (60%).
