RCGP elects former chair as new president
The Royal College of GPs (RCGP) has this week voted to select the new president of the organisation.
Succeeding Dr Terry Kemple, who demits from office at the RCGP’s annual general meeting in November, will be Professor Mayur Lakhani.
Prof Lakhani fought off competition from four other candidates to become the next president of the royal college. He is currently a practising GP in Leicestershire and was chair of the RCGP council from 2004 to 2007.
The president acts as the ceremonial head of the college, working with the chair, Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, who sets the strategic direction and policy of the RCGP.
“I would like to thank members of the RCGP for electing me to be their next President,” tweeted new president Prof Lakhani.
“This is a responsibility that I will take very seriously. I would like to thank all the other candidates who also stood in the election and from whose perspectives I have learnt a lot.
“It will be a privilege to be a national leader whilst continuing my work as a local GP and clinical lead in ongoing efforts to transform health and care.
“I look forward to working with the chair of the RCGP and other officers, members and faculties.”

Dr Valerie Vaughan-Dick, acting chief executive officer and college returning officer, said: “Many congratulations to Mayur and to all our candidates for the fair and professional way in which they have conducted this round of elections.
“At a time when GPs and general practice are under unprecedented pressures, it is more important than ever that we have a democratic college that is able to represent our members – and their patients – on the issues that matter most.”
The full results are as follows:
1 – Mayur Lakhani
2 – Roger Jones
3 – Rodger Charlton
4 – John Chisholm
5 – Paul Myres
