New pathology data system roll-out
The NHS is to test a new pathology data system that seeks to standardise requests and reports, address safety issues with the existing system and improve the reliability and effectiveness of pathology services.
Developed by the Royal College of Pathologists, in collaboration with the Department of Health and NHS Connecting for Health, the National Laboratory Medicine Catalogue (NLMC) will be rolled out for review next month, with the opportunity for professionals to test the system.
With a changing NHS, and a greater need for data to be shared more widely and transferred digitally, the system needs to enable coding and lab processing. Information must be easily shared in order to promote integration beyond the transmission of data from laboratory to GP.
The NLMC will aim to standardise units of measurement, methods of working, codes and reference ranges to cover all NHS pathology specialties.
