New chair appointed for NHS Confederation

Lord Adebowale CBE has been appointed as the new chair of the NHS confederation.

The new position will take effect from April 2020, when he replaces Sir Andrew Cash who has held this position since Rt Hon Stephen Dorrell stood down in November.

Victor Adebowale is also the chief executive of Turning Point, a social enterprise that provides health and social care interventions to approximately 100,000 people a year.

Some of his other roles include professor and chancellor at the University of Lincoln, non- executive director of the Co-operative Group and Nuffield Health and he also spent six years on the board of NHS England between 2012 and 2018.

He was awarded a CBE for services to the unemployed and homeless people in 2000, and has campaigned for many years against health inequalities.

Niall Dickson, the chief executive of the NHS Confederation, said:

“I am delighted that Lord Adebowale will be joining the NHS Confederation as our new chair.

“Victor is an experienced, passionate and exceptional ambassador for integration and for tackling health inequalities. He has been at the heart of healthcare policy for many years and has extensive experience not least in the community and voluntary sectors.

“His appointment comes at a critical time for health and care services as they come together to improve outcomes for their local populations. The NHS Confederation is changing to meet new challenges and Victor’s insight and his ability to speak truth to power will be invaluable.”

Lord Victor Adebowale CBE, said:

“I am very pleased to have been appointed as the new chair of the NHS Confederation.

“Next year looks set to be an important year for health and care with a new Government to engage with, new investment coming in, new relationships to forge, and system-working continuing to take shape across the country. I believe the NHS Confederation is well placed to bring these various voices together, to speak up objectively and authoritatively on what matters most, and to support health leaders to find the right solutions.

“I am looking forward to meeting the Confederation’s various members, including its newer networks covering integrated care systems and primary care networks, so that we can speak with one voice and improve health and care for our local communities.”
