NHS Employers reveals ‘thermometer’ list of diversity and inclusion champions

NHS Employers has this week announced its 30-strong list of Diversity and Inclusion Partners for 2017-18.

The trusts, selected as Partners, will be supported to progress and develop equality performance and improve the state of diversity in their organisations.

They will also act as champions to drive diversity across the NHS by raising awareness about what constitutes sustainable, outcome-focused improvement in managing equality.

It’s also believed that the selected trusts will be a “thermometer” by which NHS Employers can determine the key issues facing the wider NHS so that advice and guidance is relevant and up-to-date.

The successful trusts were awarded Partner status after demonstrating they were improving patient access services; that they had empowered engaged and supported staff; inclusive leadership at all levels; and that they were delivering better health outcomes for all.

Paul Deemer, head of diversity and inclusion at NHS Employers, said: “We are delighted at the response this year to our call for applications to the Partners programme, in terms of quantity and quality.

“We have heard from a wide range of organisations – by both type and geographical spread – and we look forward to supporting them on good diversity practice within their organisations.”

The announcement follows Simon Stevens warning that there was plenty of work left to do to make the NHS a more diverse workplace as many BME staff reported bullying from co-workers.

And in March, a report from the University of Exeter stated that only a quarter of key NHS leadership roles were held by women, highlighting the need for the NHS to push forward with its 50:50 by 2020 target.
