Northern Care Alliance reveals new chief executive to replace Sir David Dalton

The new chief executive of two major NHS trusts has been revealed, replacing the departing Sir David Dalton.

The Northern Care Alliance NHS Group have announced the appointment of Raj Jain, currently Sir David’s deputy at the alliance, as its new chief executive.

He will take over at Salford Royal NHS FT and the Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, heading up the Northern Care Alliance group which oversees five hospitals and associated community services.

Jain will take up the post from 1 April following the announcement that Sir David Dalton is to retire as chief executive from 31 March after spending 40 years across the NHS.

The out-going chief executive has been a major figure in the health service, known for his capacity to turn around struggling trusts, and was even appointed by former health secretary Jeremy Hunt to negotiate with junior doctors throughout a series of strikes.

Raj Jain is currently the deputy chief executive and group chief strategy and organisational development officer at the Northern Care Alliance after joining Salford Royal in January 2015.

He has previously worked as the managing director of the Greater Manchester Academic Health Science Network and as the chief executive of Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS FT, which won hospital of the year in 2012.

In a message to staff, Northern Care Alliance chairman Jim Potter said he was delighted to announce the appointment of Jain, which he said had also been confirmed by the council of governors.

Potter commented: “We are indebted to Sir David Dalton for his significant contribution to Salford Royal and latterly across the Northern Care Alliance; his legacy will continue to benefit our patients and service users, this organisation and its people for many years.

“We have no doubt that Raj will build on the progress made by the Northern Care Alliance and effectively focus on the delivery of our firm strategic aims to achieve the highest standards for service delivery and care.”

Jain himself said: “Leading the hugely talented and committed people of the NCA is an immense privilege and honour.

“I have worked in Greater Manchester for nearly 30 years, and have seen great progress in the health and well-being of the citizens of Greater Manchester.

“My burning ambition is to support the people we serve, our staff and partners to achieve even more, even in the most challenging of times.”
