A step in the right direction
The road to healthier living, and a reduced burden on the NHS, is through better networks for cycling and walking, Sustrans Cymru believes.
But it is not enough just to legislate and make these options possible for the public; a cultural shift to ensure activity is “possible, desirable and, ultimately, inevitable” is necessary, their report states.
Humans easily rely on the option that requires least effort, and at the moment more physical activity is seen as a chore rather than the norm.
Councils undoubtedly have a large part to play in the move to increase activity. Yet policy must go further than this, and consider how people can be motivated to do what is best for them and their community.
Culture can be shifted, but it takes more than just recognising this as a barrier to break it down and change people’s attitudes.
