Yesterday, the chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, laid out his plans for the NHS at his Spring Budget, announcing investment to cut waiting lists, improve productivity, and accelerate digital transformation.
The headline announcements were that the NHS would receive £3.4bn for digital technology upgrades, and a £2.5bn funding boost for 2024/25.
The Spring Budget, however, also confirmed £10m of funding to support the development of Europe’s leading centre for medical research and health science – the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
An extra £7.2m to enable better transport connections to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, along with £3m for Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to develop its long-term plan in relation to the campus.
The budget announcement is “great news” for the city of Cambridge, according to Roland Sinker, Cambridge University Hospitals’ chief executive.
He said: “The investment will help ensure we can respond to the needs of our existing population as well as developing plans for the longer term, and we look forward to working on this with health and care system partners.”
It will allow the trust to continue its partnerships in the life sciences and academic sectors as well as drive economy growth and innovation, he added. Local, regional, national and even international patients will benefit.
The latest innovations in the life sciences sector will be discussed at National Health Executive’s dedicated event, where health leaders will give their insights on everything from genomics and clinical trials, to pathology and digital technologies.
