Liverpool trust’s ground-breaking digital achievement

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LHCH) has been awarded a prestigious digital excellence accolade.

LHCH was tested on the new HIMSS EMRAM stage seven standards, which evaluate a healthcare facility’s digital capabilities.

As part of a rigorous on-site inspection, inspectors observed how the trust’s electronic patient record and other digital functions supported patient care and clinical practice.

Digital vision

Chief executive at LHCH, Liz Bishop, said: “This is testament to the incredible digital vision here at LHCH and the professionalism of all our teams who have embraced new digital ways of working and adopted new technology to enable us to deliver outstanding care for our patients.”

John Rayner, the man who led the assessment team said LHCH has thoroughly embraced the potential of digital technology and enabled transformation as a result.

He said: “It is amazing to see such commitment and how this energy has improved patient safety and the overall quality of clinical care.”

LHCH is the first trust in Europe to be validated against the new stage seven standards.

Just the beginning

LHCH’s chief digital and information officer, Kate Warriner, said the trust has “continued at pace” since achieving HIMSS stage six in 2021.

Kate explained: “While it is clearly a tremendous achievement to have received EMRAM Stage 7 accreditation, we know there’s even more we can do.”

LHCH will continue to explore avenues for digital innovation to improve patient care and clinical safety, added Kate.

Manoj Kuduvalli, the trust’s medical director, emphasised that a lot of work has gone into LHCH’s digital transformation journey since it implemented its first trust-wide electronic patient record in 2013.

“Therefore, we are absolutely delighted to be formally recognised in such a select group of healthcare centres as a Stage 7 trust,” said Manoj.
