NHS staff recognised in 2024 new year honours

Dozens of NHS staff including doctors, nurses and surgeons have been recognised in the 2024 new year honours list.

In the year the NHS marked its 75th anniversary, staff battled landmark levels of demand and unprecedented backlog to deliver life-saving care and ground-breaking technology advancements.

The honours included a CBE for Professor Tim Kendall, NHS England’s national clinical director for mental health, for his services to mental health.

Consultant paediatric and neonatal surgeon at Alder Hey, Professor Simon Kenny, who is also national clinical director for children and young people at NHS England, was awarded an OBE his services to paediatric surgery.

James McLean, joint regional chief nurse for NHS England in the north west received an OBE for services to nursing.

A CBE was also awarded to Professor Margaret Rae for her services to public health. Prof Rae is NHS England’s south west deputy director of regional health programmes and head of school for public health specialist training.

Jill Crook, director of nursing for NHS England in the south west, was given a BEM for contributions in the learning disability and autism field.

  • Belinda Voos of Great Ormond Street Hospital
  • Charity Gladstone of Gloucestershire Hospitals
  • Trudy Berlet of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals
  • Mary Woods of The Royal Marsden

OBEs for:

  • Prof Ulrike Schmidt of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
  • Lorraine Sunduza of East London NHS Foundation Trust
  • Prof Bryan Williams of University College London Hospitals
  • Prof Mark Wilcox of NHS England
  • Fiona Lindop of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton

BEMs for:

  • Shekhar Biyani of Leeds Teaching Hospitals
  • Dr Jahangir Alom of University College London Hospitals
  • Dr Fiona Butler of Health Partners at Violet Melchett
  • Carl Smith of the East of England Ambulance Service
  • Moses Ayoola of Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust

NHS chief executive, Amanda Pritchard, said: “Whether leading improvements in nursing, mental health and paediatric surgery, tackling health inequalities or delivering life-saving critical care, the difference that each of those honoured has made for patients is immense.”
